The Jubilee of Israel

This month, May 1998, marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948. For the majority of living Christadelphians, the State of Israel has "always been there." People who are now well passed middle age have grown up with the State of Israel as a commonplace circumstance which appears on maps, headlines, TV screens, and the Internet.

But for those who were twenty years old and upwards in 1948, the sudden birth of the Nation of Israel was tantamount to a direct angelic visitation. The reason for this is that for one hundred years prior to 1948, believers looked for the return of the Jews of the world to Palestine in direct fulfilment of Bible Prophecy. Now, at last, the veracity and truth of the Bible was vindicated for all to see. (Dr. Thomas published Elpis Israel in 1848.)

Not only is the establishment of the State of Israel a public witness ("Ye are my witnesses," Isaiah 43:10) to the authenticity of the Word of God, but also it is "the sign of the Son of man in heaven" (Matthew 24:30). We have lived to see the fig tree (a symbol of the nation of Israel), "shoot forth." It has put forth leaves and has become ranked with the nations of the earth politically, militarily, and economically. Scarcely a day goes by without Israel being in the forefront of the news.

We are particularly anxious that this issue (which is a follow-up issue to that of August 1997) be read and studied by our younger people. It is necessary for an understanding of the plan of salvation that the events surrounding the founding of the State of Israel be firmly grasped.

We have printed extra copies of this issue in the hope that our readers will pass them on to interested friends, with a view to strengthening the conviction that the Bible is a revelation to mankind of the Living God of Heaven.
